For Fable

I wrote this for her shortly after she died, it pretty much sums up our short time together, I never realised how much I loved her til it was too late and its taught me to really get in tune and love my other ferrets.

Fay

She came fat and fluffy- little lady muck,
Presented with this beauty I thought "I'm in luck!"
There was no initial bond, I was about to say no,
When she bit striaght through her hand and the owner said with woe,
She's a little bit naughty, she needs a firm hand,
In that very instant she was mine, her life  planned,
I took her on the day, Scooby fell in love,
Completely head over heels and all of the above,
The two were inseperable but all we did was fight,
I couldn't understand her until a vicious bite,
Then I knew her, I knew that she couldn't hear,
Mistreated by humans, it wasn't mischief but fear,
So gentle care was in order for this little girl,
As she came into my heart I let her world unfurl,
Rides in handbags, chocolate and ice cream...
Walks in the park- every ferret's dream!
But unfortunatly our time was cut short,
In the perfect house her neck was caught,
I cut her free, my mind went numb,
She could walk she could breathe, she could not run,
How long had she got? I held her in my lap,
She twisted in pain her body now her trap,
To the vets she went and hours we waited,
It hurt, unreal, possiblities were debated,
Brain damaged, shock? "This will make her well..."
24 hours later, a long drive to Hell,
I still hung onto the tinist fragment of hope,
She could have my heart I can cope!
But the vet shook his head, she was on the last rungs,
And no amount of pills would heal her poorly lungs,
I nodded, it was easy, there simply no choice,
I said goodbye, though she couldn't hear my voice,
I cried then said sorry, we brought her home,
Scooby tried to wake her, realising he was alone,
He loved her so much as did I,
I told him "Scooby, you must say goodbye",
Then she was gone, barely a year together,
Strange I thought she would live forever,
Confused and sad I asked Mum why,
She said she had a theroy and that I must not cry,
Because while rescue animals are sitting cold and lost,
They get one chance for happiness but at a cost,
They get told, "you can live forever but you must stay here,
or you can have paradise but its only for a year"
They reply "Oh please, just get me away,
A year's enough! But I cannot stay."
And so they come to us and love we smother,
And then I knew I must get another.

lovely poem, and I think your mum might be right in her theory.

Such a shame Fable had to make such a choice, but at least she had someone who worked with her.

Sweet dreams Fable :angel1:
I ferret proofed my house... but they still keep getting in

Weaseling out of things is important to learn! It's what separates us from the animals.....  Except the weasel....(Homer J Simpson)

Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines

Oh, see, impossible wishes, wishes that can never be granted, they produce a ferret. - Warehouse 13
